"Altar Serving can have some practical benefits as well:
Growth in Spirituality
Nurturing of a Healthy Self-Image
Development of Life Skills (i.e.-time management, responsibility)
Opportunities to witness, participate in and experience many Expressions of our Roman Catholic Faith”
–Diane M. Calvin, Our Sunday Visitor
A St. Symphorosa Parish Altar Server assists the Presider (priest) at worship services, especially at the Sunday Masses. Altar servers may also assist at weddings, funerals, and at other parish services.
Duties of an altar server include lighting candles, carrying the cross in procession, holding the Roman Missal for the prayers, setting up the altar for the Eucharist, assisting in receiving the gifts at the Offertory, and various other tasks.
Out of respect for families and their schedules, St. Symphorosa Parish altar servers choose their preferred weekend Mass time. Altar servers are then scheduled to serve according to their preferred Mass time.
St. Symphorosa Parish altar servers are typically recruited in January via St. Symphorosa School and Religious Education Program, but new servers may be welcomed at any time. Young men and young women, grades 5-12 who wish to become more involved in their parish community as an altar server. For more info contact the parish at: 773-767-1523.

“Altar Servers serve God and His people
at the altar whenever we gather to worship.
Altar serving has at its very core the importance of service –
to God in particular, and to the parish
community as a whole.
This is an honor, a privilege, and a
responsibility not be taken lightly.
